• This is SJO’s first appearance in the state semifinals in baseball … Spartans have 21-game
winning streak and have won a school-record 34 games entering play on Friday.
• Four starters (Brown, Johnson, Pence, Schluter) from the Spartan state championship
basketball team also start for the baseball team … Seven members of the baseball team
played on the basketball team (Oltean, Garrett Grimsley and Tegan Poole the others)
• Brown, Coon, Hoveln, Johnson, Oltean, Pence and Schluter were starters on the football
team that advanced to the 3A state semifinals as top overall seed after winning first 12
games they played in the fall.
• SJO Girls and Boys Cross Country teams both finished third at IHSA State Finals in the
Fall … Football team advanced to state semifinals … Boys Basketball won 2A state title …
Girls Track & Field finished second at IHSA State Meet this spring … Baseball will bring
home fifth IHSA state trophy this school year.
• Seven members of the Spartan squad have cumulative GPAs of 3.70 (4.00 scale) or
higher, including Seniors Aaron Schluter, Jake Pence, Garrett Grimsley, Dalton Parker
and Ty Brown… Schluter, Pence, Grimsley, all have cumulative GPAs of 4.00 or higher.
• SJO has won five consecutive conference championships, five of the last six IHSA
regional titles, three of the last four sectional titles and played in Supersectional three of
the last four seasons, including the 11-0 victory over Beardstown on Monday.
Postseason Notes …
• This weekend is long-time SJO Athletics Director and Head Football Coach Dick Duval’s final
event for the Spartans before retiring.
• Winner of today’s SJO-Murphysboro game will play the winner of Reed-Custer and Rockford
Lutheran Saturday with a scheduled 5 pm start.
• In five postseason games, SJO has outscored it’s opponents 49-2. In the five games, SJO is hitting
.443 (62-140) as a team with Carr (.600), Brown (.579), Schluter (.538) and Coon (.533) over .500
batting average, and Parker (.429), Johnson (.400) and Oltean (.400) at .400 or above.
• In five postseason games (31.0 innings), SJO pitchers have allowed 8 hits, 0 earned runs, 4 walks
and 3 hit batters, while striking out 54 and compiling a WHIP of .387.
• SJO’s 18 shutouts so far in 2016 are tied for second-most in a season in IHSA history, trailing the
21 thrown by Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin in 2014 and tied with Highland in 2008.
• SJO’s three no-hitters are tied for ninth-most in a season in IHSA history.
• SJO’s 355 strikeouts rank tied for seventh-most in a season in IHSA history and need seven to
move into fourth place on the list. If SJO surpasses Sullivan’s total of 361 in 1998, it would be the
most by an IHSA team since 1981.

1 Ty Brown, Sr., CF – Enters play this weekend with 100 career hits after setting school record with 54 in
2015 and one as a sophomore … From his leadoff position in the order, leads team in home runs (3),
stolen bases (28) and runs (42) … 28 stolen bases is a school record … His 13 extra-base hits are secondmost
on the team … Was a starting guard on SJO basketball team, and named team’s defensive player of
the year while earning Special Mention All-Conference honors … Starting tailback on the SJO football
team, earned First-Team All-Okaw Conference and team Co-MVP (with Pence) honors after rushing for
1,840 yards and 21 touchdowns, along with 20 receptions and two TD catches, on the season … Selected
as a member of the Special 100 All-State team and second-team All-Area by the Champaign News-
Gazette in football … Earned first-team All-Okaw Conference honors in baseball as a junior … Second-
Team All-Area baseball team selection by the Champaign News-Gazette in 2015 after setting school
records with 54 hits and 46 runs scored … Along with Jake Pence, named Co-Hamilton Award winner as
Spartan Boys Athlete-of-the-Year … Played baseball, basketball and football each of his four years in
school … Intends to attend the University of Illinois.
30 Kohlten Johnson, Sr., SS — Settled in at shortstop midway through 2015 season and has been a
steady force in 2016 … Leads the Spartans in walks with 25, tied for the SJO season record … As a senior
on basketball team, was SJO’s leading rebounder with 6.0 average, and fourth on the team in scoring
with 8.0 points per game … Second-Team All-Okaw Conference Valley baseball selection in 2015 as a
junior shortstop … First-Team All-Okaw Conference Valley football player as a senior linebacker who also
had 19 receptions for 216 yards and two TDs as a receiver … Tied for area lead with six interceptions,
including two returns for touchdowns … Honorable-mention All-Area by Champaign News-Gazette in
baseball as a junior … Has signed a National Letter of Intent to play baseball at the University of Illinois-
16 Dalton Parker, Sr., P/3B — Been absolutely dominant in 2016 and during his career … Career
numbers entering weekend:
170.1 IP, 24-1 Record, 64 hits allowed, 5 earned runs allowed, 45 walks, 317 strikeouts, 0.32 ERA.
His 145 strikeouts in 2016 are a school record, as is his 24 career victories, 317 strikeouts and he is in
line for season and career ERA records … His current career ERA of 0.32 would rank third in IHSA history
… Was a First-Team All-State pitcher as a junior in 2015 First-Team All Okaw Conference and First-Team
Champaign News-Gazette All-Area pick … Signed a National Letter of Intent to continue his baseball
career at Purdue … Pitched back-to-back no-hitters against Praire Central (perfect game) on May 14 and
in Regional Final vs. Oakwood (May 21) … Fired a one-hitter in 10-0 win over Bloomington Central
Catholic in Sectional Final (May 28)… Has allowed one hit, two walks and 2 hit batters in last 78 batters
faced entering the weekend … Plays third base when not pitching … Has consecutive strikeout streaks of
12 vs. Saint Thomas More (May 3), 11 vs. Red Bud (March 19) and 10 vs. Prairie Central (May 14) … Only
career loss came at Aurora Central Catholic (2-1) when he allowed two unearned runs on two errors in
one inning.
33 Aaron Schluter, Sr., 1B – Was basketball team’s third-leading scorer at 9.5 points per game … First-
Team All-Okaw Conference Valley baseball selection in 2015 as a junior first baseman/outfield …
Honorable-mention All-Area by Champaign News-Gazette in baseball as a junior … Caught 13 passes for
169 yards and two TDs as a receiver for the Spartan football team in the fall … Older brother, Brent, was
a starting forward and third-team IBCA basketball all-stater as a junior on the 2013 Spartan team that
advanced to Peoria, before earning second-team all-state honors as a senior in 2014 … Illinois State
Scholar as a senior… Salutatorian in his graduating class with 4.4/4.00 scale cumulative GPA … Intends to
attend the University of Illinois.
7 Mason Coon, Jr., RF – Big bat from the left side … In a 1-0 win over 3A No. 1 seed Champaign
Centennial, robbed a Charger hitter of a home run with a sensational catch to close the top of the
seventh inning, then smacked a walk-off home run to win the game in the bottom of the inning … In five
consecutive at bats in sectional final and supersectional had a single, a double, two triples and a home
run … Second on the team with 32 RBI and 36 runs scored … His 18 walks are third highest on the team
… His 14 extra-base hits lead the Spartans.
17 Colton Carr, Sr., P/3B — Emerged as a dominant starter in 2016 after earning a 1-0 record in 14.2
innings in 11 appearance with 14 strikeouts, no walks and a 0.00 ERA as a junior in 2015 … Set the
Spartans single-season record with 13 victories after firing a 1-hitter vs. Beardstown in the
Supersectional win on Monday … Tossed a 5-inning perfect game vs. Unity on April 12 … Also leads the
team with .443 batting average and 40 RBI in 2016, second-most in a season at SJO … Signed to continue
his baseball career at Kankakee Community College.
11 Eli Oltean, Sr., C — Has had an outstanding senior season as the starting catcher having caught 209 of
234 innings this season … Has caught three no-hitters in 2016, two by Dalton Parker and one by Colton
Carr … His .343 batting average in 2016 if fifth-best on the team this season … Has just nine strike outs in
114 plate appearances in 2016 … Signed a National Letter of Intent to play football at Murray State after
starting at quarterback for the Spartans the last two seasons … Had 28-3 TD to interception ratio as a
senior … Earned Second-Team All-Area honors by the Champaign News-Gazette and First-Team All-
Okaw Conference recognition after throwing for school-record 28 touchdowns and just three
interceptions in 2015 … Played football and baseball all four years, and basketball as a freshman and
18 Brant Hoveln, Sr., DH/C — SJO’s primary designated hitter in 2016 … His 17 walks are second on the
team … His 22 RBI are sixth on the team … Knocked in the first run of the 11-0 win over Beardstown in
the Supersectional on Monday … Started on the offensive line for the SJO football team …
22 Jake Pence, Sr., LF — Playing baseball in 2016 for first time since his freshman year and has patrolled
left field all year … Led the boy’s basketball team with 5.2 assists per game and was second in scoring at
10.0 points per game … First-team IHSFCA 3A All-State selection as a defensive back in football in 2015 …
First-Team All-Area football selection by Champaign-News-Gazette as a junior and senior … First-Team
All-Okaw Conference safety (as a junior and senior) and wide receiver after catching 44 passes for 725
yards and 16 touchdowns in 2015 … Tied for the News-Gazette area lead in interceptions with six in
2015 … Tied the IHSA state record for career interceptions returned for touchdowns with six … SJO

3 Garrett Grimsley, Sr., PR – Spartans’ main “designate runner” for either pitcher or catcher … 26 of 30
in stolen base attempts this year … Three-point specialist who led the basketball team with 45 threepointer
this past season, including 3 in the state championship game … Also an outstanding golfer who
advance to the state championships as an individual where he finished 39th in the fall … News-Gazette
Second-Team All-Area Golfer … Runner-up at regional golf tournament as a junior and senior, and
finished third at sectional as a senior … Intends to attend Illinois State University.
